It seems everybody who’s anybody in the cell phone market is doing something with Android. HTC was the first with myTouch 3G but since then Motorola has bet their entire company on it. LG has announced that half of their smartphones in 2010 will be Android based. Now, even Garmin Asus announced that they will have an Android phone this year. You want more? Sony Ericsson is working on Android phone targeted for China but this is after Motorola has already announced MOTOROI for the Korean market.

So, what’s the real Android appeal? Is this really that much superior OS than others that has been around for longer time with more models such as Symbian or Microsoft Windows Mobile? In my opinion, it’s these two. One, it’s an open source platform whereas the others require signing license agreement and paying license fee per phone. Two, the availability of tens of thousands of applications that can run on Android phone. If any one OS that’s ever going to catch up to iPhone and it’s 100,000+ App Store, it’s going to be Android.

What do you think?
