New Improved Firmware for Blackberry Storm

Even though it took almost 6 months since the original firmware was shipped with this Verizon iPhone Killer, the new version well worth the wait. There were many complaints on the original firmware with slow reacting menus and browser usage but the wait is finally over. The Storm users can now enjoy this great phone to its fullest.

Notable changes in the new version (4.7.0.148) are;

Faster responsiveness of the main menu

Blackberry Storm costs more to make than iPhone 3G

Is this a surprise to anybody? According to iSuppli, the company that does teardown and cost estimate, BB Storm costs $203 to make while iPhone 3G costs $175 to make. The difference can be explained partly by the fact that Apple typically negotiates better with their suppliers than their competitors. The other reason is BB Storm has better features not found in iPhone 3G, such as bigger screen, higher resolution camera, video recording capability, etc.

1M shipment for Blackberry Storm

We had just reported that RIM had shipped a half million Blackberry Storms in the first month yesterday. Now, Verizon has come out and said they’ve shipped 1 Million Storms since launch on late Nov, or for the past 2 months. If my math is correct, that’s a half million phones per month for the past 2 months. There is an article going around saying Storm is not an iPhone Killer because of the shipment rate. I’d say it’s still pretty good in this bad recession and should be considered an iPhone Killer because it has a whole bunch of features not found in iPhone – tactile feedback, ability edit power points, higher resolution camera, video recording capability,etc.

500,000 BB Storm sold in first month

RIM is reporting that they have sold a half million Blackberry Storms in its first month of launch. It’s not the highest selling handset model of all time or anything but still not bad considering they didn’t have the phones to ship and the initial review weren’t all that positive due to buggy software. And why was software buggy? Because RIM and Verizon wanted to launch the phone before Black Friday even though it wasn’t quite stable yet.

New Storm firmware, better or worse?

With the recent “leaked” firmware update (OS 4.07.83) , some people are reporting they’ve noticed faster camera shutter speed and faster web browser speed. However, some people are reporting phones freezing, Bluetooth and muting not working.

Well, those who have tried that version should have known better that it’s not an official release version from RIM. The last official version is OS 4.07.75.

Firmware Update for Blackberry Storm

If you weren’t happy with the factory installed firmware on your new Blackberry Storm, you now have a choice to get the upgrade that supposedly worked out some of the “bugs” or “kinks” found on the original Storm. OS 4.7.0.75 available for the BlackBerry Storm. The update is approximately 102 MB and should offer several improvements, most notably an overall improvement in the speed of the phone when transitioning between portrait and landscape mode. Additionally, it is said to cut back on the random restarts, address the issue where the user’s music would turn to the highest possible setting when someone would call, and no longer mute the phone when voice dialing is used.
