No one can question the impact that an iPhone has in the cell phone industry (although LG Prada was the first all touchscreen phone, not the iPhone). Since the first iPhone was launched in 2007, there has been a lot of copycats but also legitimate iPhone Killers that offered features not found in the iPhone.

When Apple re-introduced the iPhone 3G in 2008, it added some of that lacked features such as 3G data capability and GPS function, something that was very common in other iPhone Killers.

Since that time, iPhone Killers have offered even more features, such as bigger display, better display (AMOLED), better digital camera (up to 12MPixel), video recording, turn by turn directions, voice recognition, FM radio, FM transmitter, etc. etc. etc.

However, purely on the software side, Apple was able to offer the turn by turn navigation, and copy and paste function.

What will the “new” iPhone be like? The question still remains, will the iPhone ever catch up to the real iPhone Killers? I sure hope so. Why? It will make the iPhone Killers even better.

Sales of smartphones running on Google’s Android platform will surpass those of Apple by 2012, according to new research by Informa Telecoms & Media.

The research firm said that though handset sales will decline generally in 2009, sales of smartphones are predicted to grow by 30 percent. The key to growth will be open-source development projects such as Android and the Symbian OS. So far, LG Electronics, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are among the major vendors that have committed to launching Android phones before the end of the year.

In a related note, Reinhard Clemens, the CEO of Deutsche Telekom’s large businesses division T-Systems, criticized Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform and called Android the future mobile OS standard. Deustche Telekom is the parent company of T-Mobile USA. Clemens was speaking at this year’s Cebit conference, and said that Android’s open-source nature gave it a definitive edge.

Notice, the complaints aren’t about the iPhone’s gadgetry but its network connection.

It just goes to show you that the true iPhone Killer not only has to work well with multimedia stuff, it has to work as a phone, foremost, and as a connected data device.

Here is the full story on the lawsuits.
