All good things must come to an end and so has the all you can eat data for $30 from AT&T. This plan originally introduced at the launch of Apple iPhone in 2007 is still available for all existing iPhone and other smartphone customers but any new subscribers will no longer be able to sign up for the unlimited plan.

Here is the new plan with price and data usage:

DataPlus: Provides 200 MB of data for $15 per month. If customers exceed 200 MB, they can purchase an additional 200 MB for $15. AT&T said 65 percent of its smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.

DataPro: Provides 2 GB of data for $25 per month. If customers exceed 2 GB, they can purchase an additional 1 GB of data for $10. AT&T said 98 percent of its smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.

Tethering: Smartphone customers–including iPhone customers–with the DataPro plan will have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer, AT&T said.

For the light users, they will see a reduction in monthly fees but for the heavy users, they would have to think twice about watching that video over the cellular network. Interesting enough, the plan goes into effect on June 7th when Apple is expected to announce their latest model of the iPhone.

The real question remains, will other carriers follow AT&T’s lead into tiering the data plan or will they still offer the unlimited plan to differentiate themselves?

If you are not seeing anything on the screen, you are not alone. None of the iPhone or iPad owners are able to see the newly built site for the upcoming Toy Story 3 movie site. Why?

Because Apple has intentionally decided not to support Flash. Somehow, the creative team at Disney/Pixar team must not have gotten that memo as the whole site was built around the Flash. And did you know that the head of Apple is also the majority shareholder of Disney? It will be interesting to see how fast they take down the site and show something else…..

Apple has officially unveiled some of the details to highly rumored new OS version for the iPhone, iPod, and iPads. As expected the new OS will have multi-tasking feature that was sorely lacked on the previous versions, and criticized heavily for not having. Other Android and other OS based phones all had supported multi-tasking for a while but it took Apple 4th generation of OS to finally offer it. I guess for many iPhone users, it’s better late than never.

Supposedly, there are more than 100+ new features with the new software version, more notably better e-mail, folders, support for iBook, etc.

However, you won’t get the new OS to upgrade your iPhone until later this summer.

However, the same survey found that 90% of iPhone and Android phone owners would stay with their respective OS when their contracts are up. This is not a good news for the RIM.

We all know what happened to the smartphone world when Apple first unveiled the all touchscreen phone in 2007. Before the iPhone, the total number of all touchscreen phone was 1 (LG Prada). After the iPhone, the total number of all touchscreen phone equals gazillion. Now, it’s almost impossible to find any phone manufacturer without an touchscreen model.

But, do you know what it also did to the price of all the smartphones? Initially, the original iPhone was quite expensive at $599. Then, when it launched 3G model in 2008, they reduced it down to $199 and that magic price has stuck for a very long time. In order for any other phones to compete, they cannot price their phone above $199 even for a brand new phone that have more expensive features than iPhone. They just can’t. Of course, I’m only referring to the phones that are subsidized by the carriers for signing minimum 2 year contract with data services. Only the unlocked phones are priced higher.

Whether you like it or not, Apple and its iPhones had significant impact on the wireless industry. And for the consumers. Before the iPhone, not many people were willing to pay $30 on top of their voice plan for the data. Now, it’s very common for people to have unlimited data plan. And because of all the data that people use, carriers are forced to upgrade their infrastructure.

We had reported yesterday that Apple had filed lawsuit against HTC over its 20 patents. Today, we have learned that even though Google is not mentioned in the lawsuit itself, the suit really is targeted at Google who sells Nexus One phone manufactured by HTC. And here is Google coming to back up HTC even though they are not the one being sued.

“We are not a party to this lawsuit,” the Mountain View, California, company said in a statement. “However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.”

HTC is not a small company but relative to the sizes of Google and Apple, it’s small. So, why is HTC fighting Apple and Google’s war? Google used to the preferred partner of Apple. Google’s CEO used to be on Apple’s board. That has all changed when Google started making their own OS called Android and started selling their own phone, Nexus One, running the Android OS. Apple in return have decided to cut out Google as the default search engine on iPhones, and even bought a mobile advertising company to compete against Google.

Two big guys fighting over the market. Nothing new. What I’m interested in is, why are they using HTC to fight their war?

Today, Apple has filed patent law suits against another iPhone Killer maker, HTC. Apple claims HTC is using 20 of Apple patents. Apple is also in patent suit in Nokia, another iPhone Killer maker and the world’s largest cell phone maker.

What do you read into this? Apple is no stranger to law suits but would they go after a company that they feel zero threat to their bottom line or only those who can actually steal some of their potential customers? I’m thinking more of the latter. HTC has been putting out model after model that have some unique features not yet found in Apple’s own iPhones, which only gets refreshed once a year. I’d say Apple is feeling the heat from the competition.

According to Adobe, there has been 7 million tries from iPhone and iPod owners who tried to download the Flash support from adobe website to view certain websites that support the Flash.

Well, we know how Apple and Steve Job feels about the Flash. He called it buggy and lazy on the part of the company that promotes Flash. He REFUSES to support Flash on Apple products, betting that Flash will eventually go away.

You have to give some credit to Apple and Steve for always thinking unconventional. He did away with keypads on cell phones and look at how many touchscreen only phones there are in the market? Go further back in history, Apple Mac was one of the first to do away with the floppy drive. Some called it a bad move but look happened now? You can’t find any new PC with a floppy drive.

Is Steve right about the Flash? I guess only time will tell. According to Strategy Analytics, they predict 53% of the smartphones by 2012 will support Flash. Will Steve admit he was wrong about Flash and start supporting Flash or will he hold his ground while all other phones support Flash?

What do you think?
