This is a guest article by Ruben Corbo, a writer for the website Broadband Expert where you can find internet service providers in your area and compare prices on different deals for your wireless internet necessities.

The Apple iPhone 5 will be released sometime soon, likely in September 2011, according to widespread rumors. As consumers wait for the long anticipated update from Apple, competitors based on the Android platform ready themselves for stiff competition to win over those consumers. With all of the success of prior iPhone generations behind it, does the competition even stand a chance against the iPhone 5? The commonly viewed capable alternatives to the iPhone are the HTC Evo 3D, Motorola DROID Bionic, and the Samsung Galaxy S2. The Samsung Galaxy S2, in particular, appears to be best positioned to compete against the yet to be released iPhone 5.

(Photo Courtesy of Flickr User dito_13)

Rumors for the iPhone 5 have long speculated that its shape will have different geometry than the current iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 will likely have a 4-inch screen size, up from the current 3.5-inch size. Apple’s Retina display on the iPhone 5 will give it an impressive screen resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. Other key features and specifications likely to be found on the iPhone 5 are Apple’s IOS 5 operating system, a 5 or 8 MP camera, a dual core 1 GHz processor, integrated NFC near-field communication, and 802.11 b/g/n wireless internet connectivity.

Of the competing Android based phones, specifications and features offered by the Samsung Galaxy S2 stack up favorably to the rumored iPhone 5 specs. The Samsung S2 has yet to be launched in the U.S. market, however it has already gained widespread popularity and acceptance internationally. Features and specifications on the Samsung S2 include a slightly larger screen than rumored on the iPhone 5, at 4.2 inches in size. To the eye, the S2’s vibrant 480 x 800 screen resolution should compare well to the iPhone 5’s retina display. The Samsung S2’s 1.2 GHz processor and 8 MP camera will also present ample competition to the new iPhone 5. For connectivity, the Samsung S2 also provides compatibility with 802.11 b/g/n wireless internet technologies, along with integrated NFC near-field communication support.

Both the iPhone 5 and the Samsung S2 provide WIFI Direct technology, enabling the phones to synchronize with other devices over a wireless internet connection without actually joining the network. What is unclear at the moment is if the iPhone 5 will also include WIFI hotspot support, as does the Samsung S2. The WIFI hotspot support in the S2 allows multiple devices to be tethered to an impromptu network for added wireless internet connectivity.

When the iPhone 5 arrives, it will be popular for sure, especially with the more than 500,000 apps available for download over its wireless internet connections. However the Samsung S2 will provide consumers with a viable, if not superior alternative. The Android platform has been gaining widespread popularity, and the more than 200,000 apps available are sure to grow in number sooner rather than later. Of course price point matters, but we have yet to see what either the iPhone or Samsung S2 will cost consumers in the U.S. So the iPhone 5 is coming soon, but the competition will be there, and that is good news for consumers.

Apple has just released their earnings from the previous quarter that beat all the analysts expectations with record shipping of iPhones and iPads. Those numbers are what the other guys would love to see for their one year or two year shipment, something Apple does on quarterly basis. Google has recently reported that they activate over 550,000 Android devices per day. That comes out to be almost 50M units per quarter. Considering Android community consists of a ton of different companies, Apple doing more than half of that number all by themselves is pretty impressive.

Not quite but sort of. Sprint is selling ZTE branded iPod Touch case that allows you to connect the iPod Touch to Sprint’s 3G EVDO Network. So, what this will allow is, you can use it to browse internet on your iPod Touch anywhere, not just where the WiFi is. And by using Skype, you can also use it just like a cell phone. And throw in something even the iPhone 4 doesn’t have. It can act as a WiFi Hotspot for other WiFi devices to connect to internet. You’ll probably have to sign up for Sprint’s data plan but in the end you might come ahead than buying an iPhone and paying almost $100 per month to AT&T.

In public, both companies maintain that the partnership is ideal but we know there has to be more than what they are leading on. Here is a very detailed and juicy story behind the scene on all the key meetings and decision that shaped the pricing, data plan, and possible deflection to Verizon.
The company that brought all those 1Ghz SnapDragon Processor to be the fastest smarphones not named Apple is doing it again. Qualcomm has announced their latest offering that runs at 1.2Ghz, supports display up to WXGA 1280 x 800 pixels, 1080p HD video recording, etc.

You know Apple is not going to be using this processor since they’ve invested in their own processor A4 that runs at 1Ghz. This processor was first used in the iPads and is rumored to be in the next generation iPhones. Just when Apple has caught up to the 1Ghz Processor war, the iPhone Killers will have an edge with this new processor. No official word yet on who will be the first phone manufacturer to launch the new model with 1.2Ghz processor.

The bar has been raised again.
