According to iSuppli, it cost $144 in material to build HTC’s G1 - the Google Android phone that sells for $179.
It took the original iPhone quite some time before they sold their first 1M phones (74 days to be exact). The Google Android based T-Mobile G1 were pre sold 1.5M even before the launch. Very impressive, especially considering that the carrier is T-Mobile.
Apparently, T-Mobile’s upcoming G1 (HTC G1) is more popular than they had anticipated. They’ve already pre sold everything they’ve allocated to manufacture. So, if you have not pre-ordered these, you are out of luck.
They have not said exactly what the total number they had allocated so we don’t know for sure, but let’s do the comparison later on how well G1 launch is compared to Apple’s launch last year. (It’s only fair to compare 1 carrier to 1 carrier launch)
