When Apple first entered the handset market in 2007 with only one model, many of the top handset manufacturers at the time did not take it very seriously. They dismissed it as a more of kids phone or a play phone not appropriate for the corporate world. Back then, Nokia was #1 handset manufacturer in the world in both total number of handsets as well as #1 smartphone manufacturer using their own Symbian operating system, Samsung #2, Motorola #3, LG #4, and Sony Ericsson #5. In short 4 years, Apple has taken the #1 spot as the largest smartphone manufacturer and in the process made Nokia to fire their CEO, kill their Symbian OS, and partner with Microsoft for their smartphone mobile OS. During the same time, we also saw RIM (makers of Blackberry) lose their tight held grip of the corporate smartphone market. Samsung embraced Google’s Android OS early on and has done well with their Galaxy S line of smartphones. Motorola had to change their CEO and start over by also betting it all on Android. Both LG and SonyEricsson were late to smartphone market and saw their overall market share decline. HTC, who only makes smartphones, saw their market share increase along with growth in smartphone market.

We at iPhoneKiller.com believe Apple will continue to be the major force to be reckon with in the smartphone market. Whether they will continue to hold #1 position is to be determined. Android OS based smartphones are popping everywhere covering all segments while Apple’s iPhone only maintains the high-end side. Unless Apple also (as rumored) play in low-end smartphones, we expect the sum of all Android phones will continue to increase (over 50% now) and eventually eat into Apple’s current market share and we may see a new champion.

Since Apple first introduced the world to iPhone in 2007, they continued to raise the bar each year with introduction of new models. While Apple is only one company trying to be as creative as possible, the collection of other iPhone Killer manufacturers combined always seem to be a step ahead (since they get to introduce more than 1 model per year) and whatever was lacking the previous model, they always find a way to put it in the new model.

iPhone 4 was no exception. They were always being dinged for not having high enough resolution camera, lacking HD video recording, lacking high resolution screen, slower processor speed, lacking multi tasking capable OS, etc. The latest model was able to fill those void, although not all. At the same time, it also raised the bar for rest of the iPhone Killers that did not go all out and tried to build the best. And because of that this blog had to make some major changes to the models that are no longer worthy of being called the true iPhone Killers and moved them to the archived section.

The rest of 2010 will be exciting to watch as many of the soon to be released iPhone Killers will try to even outdo what’s already an incredible phone in iPhone 4.

Some of the rumors circulating calls for 2Ghz processor phone to 4.4 inch touchscreen phone.

I waited few weeks since the launch of iPhone 3GS to make this post to make sure the hype has died down and people will be more rational.
Contrary to what some of the visitors think of this blog, I do not hate the iPhone and I do not think the iPhones are piece of junk. In fact, I do admire what Apple has done with the iPhone and how they revolutionized the way new phones are being designed these days.

The original Apple iPhone launched in 2007 was truly a game changer, even if it wasn’t the very first all touchscreen phone (that honor belongs to LG Prada). Since that launch, there were many all touchscreen phones trying to be the next iPhone Killer. I would say many fell very short while some of them find ways to exploit the short comings of the original iPhone, such as faster data speed, GPS, video recording, higher resolution digital camera, bigger screen, voice recognition, haptic feedback, and was only available in AT&T, etc. It wasn’t hard for many of the new phones to include all these features not found on the iPhone.

Apple then launched iPhone 3G in 2008 that supported 3G data service and GPS, with more memory. And that raised the bar for many of the iPhone Killers to come up with something more and different. It’s one thing to have just the touchscreen and better hardware spec, it’s totally another thing to have the kind of easy interface of the iPhones. Companies like HTC, Samsung, and LG started to come up with their own unique user interfaces that were just as easy as iPhones, if not better.

And recently, Apple raised the bar again with iPhone 3GS that supported even faster data service (HSDPA), the digital compass, more memory, video recording, better camera, faster processor, and voice recognition feature. Now, these are not unique features. In fact, majority of them are supported on many of the existing iPhone Killers. However, it certainly put the pressure on the other phone manufacturers to go back and come up with even more compelling feature to compete with the latest iPhone 3GS.

We already discussed the user interface but the other big factor from software point of view is the available applications. The apple apps store certainly has more available applications than any others, even though majority of them might be total useless applications there are some really good ones not available elsewhere.

On the hardware side, we still think there are few items that Apple will eventually roll out to keep up with the other iPhone Killers. What are some of them? Higher resolution (480×800), better camera (12M+), better display (AMOLED), faster processor (1GHz+), etc. (See our Killer Feature List for more)

All in all, I’m excited for what other iPhone Killers will come up with and how Apple will counter them next year. The cycle will continue and the consumers are the ones who’ll benefit from this fierce competition.
