After more than a year of waiting, Rogers Wireless is finally gearing up to rollout Apple’s iPhones. The carrier said it would offer the handset to its subscribers some time this year. Rogers is the only GSM provider in Canada, so the partnership was more or less a shoe-in and comes as little surprise. Rogers’ COO Nadir Mohamed hinted at the partnership in early 2007 shortly after Apple unveiled the handset: “I’m not saying whether we have agreements or anything [with Apple], but given the iPhone was launched on GSM, we’re in good position to reinforce that we’re the first and have the best-feature devices.”

Apple Inc. reported revenue of $7.5 billion and net profit over $1 billion in its second fiscal quarter, with revenue beating expectations. That’s up from revenue of $5.3 billion and net profit of $770 million in the year-ago quarter.

The company’s iPhone sales for the quarter reached 1.7 million — which the company said kept it on pace to reach its year-end goal of 10 million iPhones sold. Apple reported selling 2.3 million Macintosh computers, a 51% jump in unit volume and 54% rise in revenue over the year-ago quarter. It sold 10.6 million iPods.

Apple’s stock rose near 2% before sinking nearly 1% in after-hours trading.

However, the company’s forecast of $1 per share earnings and $7.2 billion in revenue for the fiscal third quarter fell below expectations, as did its projection for flat gross margins.

CEO Steve Jobs, in a prepared statement, said that the results were the best ever for the second fiscal quarter.

Goldstriker, the UK firm that specialises in adding additional luxury (and exclusivity) to personal electronics, have unveiled their latest 24ct tweak to the iPhone range: a leather and gold re-trim of the Apple handset. Adding the sort of hide you’d usually find cladding the seats of a Ferrari or Bentley, together with lashings of real gold, the company plus adds quite a bit to the iPhone’s price tag: they’re estimating it’ll be around £900 ($1,800) when it goes on sale at the end of April.
