It’s wasn’t that long ago when Nokia was #1 in smartphone market for their usage of Symbian OS. Oh how fast things change in the mobile world. And Windows Mobile dominated the early PDAs and smartphones. Oh, how quickly things change in the mobile world….. Blackberry had their own OS. Apple had their own OS. And Google provided free Android OS for everybody. Then, we saw the OS market share of Symbian and Windows plummet. Fast.

Nokia was forced to shake things up and got a new CEO last year. The new CEO has decided to bet their future on Microsoft’s Windows OS instead of Google Android, as all other big handset manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and Motorola have decided to go with. And Nokia has a good reason. They didn’t think they can truly differentiate themselves as all other big and small guys using the exact same OS. So, they decided to gamble big on Microsoft’s new OS, which has received some good reviews but failed to really grab any market share from the other guys when slew of new phones were launched last year with Phone 7 OS. In fact, LG had publicly said they were very disappointed with their Phone 7 OS based smartphone launch.

Only time will tell whether Nokia made the right decision to go with Windows Mobile instead of Google Android, but we can safely bet that it was the right decision to abandon Symbian.

It seems all the big boys of cell phone guys have their own OS. Research In Motion was the first with their own OS on all their Blackberries, while others used Windows Mobile. Nokia used Symbian, and later purchased the company. Apple, of course, makes their own Apple OS to run on all their iPhones. Palm has their own webOS. Sony Ericsson has used Microsoft’s Windows Mobile initially but also is venturing out to using Google’s Android. Motorola, under the new CEO, is betting the company on Android. Samsung, who has used both Windows Mobile and Android, is coming out with their own OS called bada. LG, who typically follows Samsung in many ways, also have phones using Windows Mobile and Android, but they are not following Samsung when it comes to creating their own OS.

What is your favorite OS?
