Despite recent success with Android based phones, Motorola has been knocked out of the top 5 spot for the first time, ever. They used to be the one and only back in the days but they’ve been slipping down slowly and now, they are not even on the top 5 list anymore. The new one that took Motorola’s spot is the Research In Motion, the maker of Blackberries. This just goes to show you how important the smartphones are in the handset market place.

Where does Apple fit in this picture? Well, they are still relatively new and only have 1 new version of phone per year that sells like crazy, but the other more established players have more models and still the bulk of the volume is coming from non-smartphones in emerging markets where Apple does not play in. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple in here someday as smartphones become more and more popular, and as Apple starts to go into new markets that they are currently not playing in (e.g. Verizon Wireless).
